One of the biggest lessons I've learned throughout my career is that a design looking beautiful on a screen does not always guarantee it will succeed in the real world.

Over the last decade, I've worked across print, large-scale signage, production, and digital design, collaborating with creative teams, agencies, and freelance designers along the way. I've seen many visually strong concepts that ultimately required significant adjustments because the final application, scale, or production environment had not been fully considered during the design phase.

One project that especially reinforced this involved a large-scale installation at the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While the original mockup worked beautifully digitally, the graphics later had to be adapted to the exact window dimensions while also accounting for framing, visibility, and how the design would function at a much larger physical scale.

Great design is not just about how something looks on screen — it's about how it performs in the real world.

Working in production environments completely reshaped the way I approach design. It taught me that materials, scale, viewing distance, installation surfaces, seams, hardware, and production limitations are just as important as the visual concept itself. If those factors are not considered early, the final result often requires compromises that can alter the original vision.

I've also seen how fast-paced production settings can sometimes force design decisions to prioritize speed over thoughtful execution. In those situations, files that were not built carefully from the start can quickly become difficult to adapt successfully.

A few principles I always keep in mind:

  • Start with accurate measurements whenever possible
  • Design for the actual installation surface and environment
  • Consider scale, visibility, and production limitations early
  • Think beyond the digital mockup

At the end of the day, great design is not just about how something looks on screen — it's about how successfully it performs in the real world.
